The July school holidays are almost here — two weeks of sleeping in, muddy boots, and the perennial parental question: what are we going to do today? The good news is that Hamilton and the greater Waikato region have plenty on offer, from free community events celebrating Matariki to iconic day trips into some of New Zealand's most beautiful scenery. Whether you're after structured activities or simply want to get out and explore, here's your guide to making the most of the 5–19 July break.
Celebrate Matariki with Your Whānau
The July school holidays fall right in the heart of Matariki season, with the public holiday on Friday 10 July 2026. The wider Matariki ki Waikato festival typically runs for several weeks across June and July, hosting more than 50 vibrant experiences across Hamilton and the wider region — most of them free or koha-based — ranging from arts and music to hauora (wellbeing), taiao (environment), and Mātauranga Māori.
One of the standout annual events is the Manu Tukutuku Kite Day at Hamilton Gardens — a free, whānau-friendly festival staple where tamariki and whānau can learn about the stars and the connection Māori had with manu tukutuku (kites). Keep an eye on the Matariki ki Waikato website and Hamilton City Council's events page closer to the holidays for the full 2026 programme.
Hamilton City Council also runs its own free Matariki celebration, Maanawatia a Matariki, a free event at Innes Common filled with live music, entertainment, food, markets and more, with free BUSIT bus services available to the event. It's a wonderful winter night out for the whole family — just rug up warm!
Free Fun at Hamilton City Libraries
Rainy July day? Hamilton's libraries are a holiday lifesaver. Each school holiday period, Hamilton City Libraries run activity-based programmes with different themes, open to all school-aged kids and held across all branches. All events are usually free, though registration may be required for more popular programmes. Kids get to take their crafty creations home, and there are sometimes prizes to be won too.
Past holiday programmes have included everything from Matariki planting workshops and TinkerCAD 3D modelling classes to LEGO Club, PlayStation tournaments, paper craft sessions, and even free movie screenings. All materials are provided and every activity is free. Check the Hamilton Libraries event calendar in late June for the July 2026 schedule — programmes are spread across Central Library, Chartwell, Dinsdale, Glenview, Hillcrest, St Andrews, and Te Kete Aronui Rototuna branches, so there's likely one near you.
Explore Hamilton Gardens
While you need to pay to enter the Enclosed Gardens, there is plenty that remains free for everyone at Hamilton Gardens, including enchanting bush walks alongside the Waikato River, the boardwalk around Turtle Lake where you can spot fish, walks through vibrant rhododendrons, picnics among the roses in Rogers' Rose Garden, and the Children's Playground.
The rest of the Hamilton Gardens site, including the playground, Turtle Lake, and Outer Gardens, is open 365 days of the year. Hamilton residents under 16 get free entry to the Enclosed Gardens as well, so it's well worth checking your eligibility at the gate. Pack a thermos and a picnic rug — even in winter, a stroll through this extraordinary "museum of gardens" is a memorable outing.
Structured Fun with sKids Hamilton East
If you're a working parent, or your kids are simply craving a full programme of activities with new friends, sKids Hamilton East is running a cracking two-week holiday programme from 6–17 July 2026 based at 7 Dawson Street, Hamilton East.

Visit Te Whare Taonga o Waikato Museum & Gallery
General admission to Te Whare Taonga o Waikato Museum & Gallery is free, with the museum open from 10am to 5pm every day (except Christmas Day). Entry fees apply for the Exscite interactive kids' space and some temporary exhibitions, but the main galleries — covering visual art, social history, tangata whenua, and science — are yours to explore at no cost.
The museum is a fantastic wet-weather destination and a great place to learn about the history and culture of the Waikato. Its location just off the Waikato River Trail also makes it easy to combine with a riverside walk or bike ride.
Ride, Walk, and Play: Hamilton's Parks and Trails
Hamilton is brilliantly set up for active family adventures that won't cost a cent.
Hamilton Lake Domain (Lake Rotoroa) is a beloved local favourite. The 3.8km walkway around the lake includes varied natural lakeside vegetation, grassed parklands perfect for a picnic, a boardwalk section, playgrounds, and a café. The walkway is mostly flat, making it suitable for pushchairs, and is also a popular dog walking spot — keep your eyes open for ducks, pukeko, and geese. All public playgrounds managed by Hamilton City Council are 100% free for everyone to use.
Hillcrest Stadium is another great free option, with a wavy sealed loop track suitable for anyone on wheels, a playground, and a basketball court.
For a nature fix closer to the city, tucked away in Hamilton East is A J Seeley Gully, where you can discover mature groves of kahikatea, rimu, kānuka, mahoe, nikau palms, and ferns along a 30–60 minute walking track. Make sure to look up and listen out for the different birds thriving here.
Day Trip: Raglan and Bridal Veil Falls
Just 35 minutes from Hamilton, Raglan is one of those places that makes you feel like you're properly on holiday. Wander the eclectic main street, grab fish and chips at the harbour, walk the black sand beach at Ngarunui, and soak in the laid-back surf town atmosphere.
On the way, don't miss Waireinga / Bridal Veil Falls. Free to enter and suitable for families with children, Bridal Veil Falls offers stunning views and a relatively easy, well-maintained walk. The spectacular 55-metre-high falls are an easy 10-minute walk through native bush, following the Pakoka River to two viewing platforms at the top, with a steep set of steps leading down to the base for a magnificent straight-on view across the pool and up at the falls. Winter lighting can make the falls especially dramatic — take your camera.
More to Explore in the Greater Waikato
The region beyond Hamilton is full of free and low-cost adventures for families:
Wairere Falls near Matamata is another spectacular free waterfall walk — completely free of charge and spectacular no matter the season. The track climbs through lush bush and rewards you with views of a multi-tiered 153-metre cascade — New Zealand's highest accessible waterfall.
Morrinsville is worth a quirky detour for its iconic life-size painted cow sculptures scattered throughout the town, celebrating the region's proud dairy farming heritage.
Te Aroha offers the free-to-view Mokena Geyser in the domain, as well as lovely walking tracks, a mineral pool complex (paid), and the charming heritage township.
For families who love the outdoors, the Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari near Cambridge is a world-class ecological sanctuary, though entry fees apply. Alternatively, enjoy free walks around the base of the maunga and in nearby Pirongia Forest.
